I’m not sure Chang knew the entire truth about NK. I think the propaganda does a great job keeping everyone in check. Most of the the North Korean people cannot travel even around their own country so it is very difficult for them to know what is ‘really’ going on. For example, the people that live in Pyongyang are part of the ‘elite’ group of North Korean citizens, so I’m not sure how much of the famine in the 90’s really hit Chang. She is definitely unaware of the existence of prison camps and many other things going on in her own country. The stories we spoke of usually pertained to family and love.
